Opinion: "Steal My Girl" or Owning Her?

Well, I don't know to lose my respect for One Direction or pity them for their lack of creative control. The music was good, very typical One Direction but the lyrics of "Steal My Girl" were absolutely appalling. (To think I'm attending their concert next year) "She belongs to me", "And every jaw drop

When she's in those jeans", "kisses like a queen", "She knows, she knows/That I never let her down before/She knows, she knows/That I'm never gonna let another take her love from me now." are some of the extremely disgusting, ideology-filled lyrics.

First, it reinforces the ideology that a woman belongs to a man. I'm pretty sure that if the characters in the song have been in a relationship for that long, he has let her down before BUT they worked through such a period. "Her love" does not belong to "me". Her love belongs to herself and she can freely give it to anyone. Neither does she belong to "me". She belongs to herself.

Secondly, it's a blatant objectifying of women. It does not reference her good heart or her personality or perhaps how she is kind or how she is intelligent or hard-working or passionate. No, it's all about her in "those jeans" and how everyone's "jaw drop(s)".

I am so appalled. I could forgive "What Makes You Beautiful" and "One Thing" but this is so blatant that it just makes me sick listening to it. They have had good songs in the past. I do not know what made them come up with such lyrics but if they truly wrote this themselves, it displays how misogynistic they are. It's truly wondrous how they can keep girlfriends.
